Performance Marketing for Mobile Apps: How to Advertise Smarter in Southeast Asia
Let’s be honest: getting someone to download your app is the easy part. Getting them to open it twice, sign up, and eventually pay for it is where things get tricky.
If you’re running performance marketing for mobile apps, or thinking about it, you’ve probably noticed that app advertising doesn’t behave like a normal website campaign. Your “product” lives on someone’s phone, competing with hundreds of other icons. People decide in seconds. And the data you rely on to make decisions is patchier than it used to be.
The good news is that a well-run performance marketing approach can handle all of this. Below, we’ll walk through the biggest hurdles app brands face, how paid media can solve them, which platforms deserve your attention, and which numbers are worth watching. Along the way, we’ll share real examples from apps and app-led businesses we’ve worked with at KPI Media.
‍
Why Mobile App Advertising Is Harder Than It Looks
‍

Everyone’s fighting for the same few seconds
There’s an app for sleeping, an app for budgeting, an app for splitting the bill, and an app for just about everything in between. Your potential users know this, and their thumbs move fast.
So your ad has one job: show, quickly, what problem your app solves. A clear answer to “why should I care?” Ads that lead with a specific pain point (can’t fall asleep, tired of messy expense claims) almost always beat ads that lead with a logo.
‍
Privacy is now part of the user experience
Most apps ask people to sign up or log in, which means asking for personal details. People are more careful about handing those over, and regulators are paying attention. In Singapore, that means the PDPA. Across Southeast Asia, similar data protection rules are appearing market by market.
There are practical things you can do:
- Ask for consent clearly. Use plain language, not a wall of legalese.
- Collect only what you need. If the app works without a birthday, don’t ask for one.
- Lean on first-party data. Information users share directly with you is more durable than third-party tracking.
- Plan for iOS. Apple’s App Tracking Transparency means users have to opt in before apps can track them across other companies’ apps and websites. Many say no, so your measurement setup should work with aggregated and modelled data, not only user-level tracking.
Treat privacy as a trust signal, not just a legal checkbox. It also makes your ad performance data more reliable in the long run.
‍
The install is not the finish line
This is the big one. Someone sees your ad, installs the app, and then... what? Do they finish onboarding? Do they start a free trial? Do they move from the free tier to premium, the way you hoped?
If you can only see installs, you’re measuring the start of the journey and guessing the rest. That’s how brands end up celebrating a cheap install cost while their revenue stays flat.
Fixing this means connecting your ad platforms to your analytics and, where needed, to a mobile measurement partner (MMP) such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch or Singular. Firebase and GA4 add in-app event data. If you also generate leads, a CRM such as HubSpot closes the loop. We also offer GA4 migration and CAPI implementation to help with this, and our free UTM naming templates keep your campaign data tidy.

How Performance Marketing Helps Mobile Apps Grow
Paid media is more than “buy installs.” For mobile apps, it does three jobs.
1. Puts the right feature in front of the right person. Every app has its own interface and strengths. A sleep app, a fitness app and a business banking app each appeal to different people for different reasons. Performance marketing lets you test messages against specific audiences until you find who actually needs what you built.
2. Keeps you visible in a crowded market. When competitors are bidding on the same searches and scrolling into the same feeds, staying present, and staying relevant, takes constant adjustment.
3. Grows your audience without sacrificing quality. A thousand wrong-fit installs are worth less than a hundred people who stick around. Good campaigns optimise toward meaningful actions (sign-ups, subscriptions, purchases), not just downloads.
‍
The Platforms That Matter for Mobile App Advertising
You don’t need to be everywhere. You need to be in the right places for your goal. Here’s how each major option fits in:
- Meta Ads: Great for visual storytelling and reaching people while they browse, ideal for building demand and testing creative angles.
- Google Performance Max: Uses automation to serve your ads across Google’s channels, which is handy for scaling when your conversion data is solid.
- Google SEM: Catches people actively searching for a solution, so intent is high.
- Programmatic: Extends your reach across the wider web and apps, useful for awareness and retargeting.
- Google App Campaigns (the successor to Universal App Campaigns): Built for promoting apps across Google’s surfaces, with installs and in-app actions as optimisation goals.
- YouTube Ads: Lets you show the app in action, which is powerful for anything that needs a quick demo.
‍
The Metrics That Actually Matter
‍

‍
It’s tempting to track everything. Don’t. Start with a small set of numbers that tie back to your business goal:
- Cost per install (CPI) or cost per lead (CPL): Which one matters depends on what the campaign is for. Banking and insurance advertisers often lean on CPL or CPA, while some apps look at CPI first, but it really comes down to your goal and how your funnel works.
- Conversion rate: What share of people take the action you want, whether that’s a sign-up, a trial or a purchase. A low rate can point to a messaging, targeting or onboarding problem.
- ROAS (return on ad spend): The revenue you earn for every dollar of ad spend. It’s the clearest way to see whether campaigns pay for themselves.
- Retention: Are people still using the app after day 1, day 7 and day 30? A cheap install that disappears tomorrow isn’t cheap.
- Lifetime value (LTV): What a typical user is worth over time. Compare it with your acquisition cost to see how much you can afford to spend.
- Cost per in-app action: What it costs to get someone to complete a key step, like finishing onboarding or subscribing to premium.
For a quick way to monitor all of this in one place, an automated dashboard saves a lot of spreadsheet time.
‍
Why a Mobile App Needs a Performance Marketing Agency
You can absolutely run campaigns in-house. But there are good reasons many app teams bring in specialists.
Experience and playbooks. An agency has seen what works across audiences, creative formats and platforms, and can apply those lessons from day one instead of making you learn them the expensive way. At the same time, a good one stays flexible, because every business has its own dynamics.
Smarter tracking setups. Deciding how to track ads, whether you need an MMP, and whether a CRM like HubSpot belongs in the mix is much easier with someone who has done it before.
A wider view. Agencies work with clients across industries, so they spot ideas that in-house teams, focused on one category, might miss.

Why KPI Media for Your Mobile App
We’ve worked with mobile apps and app-led brands, including Enerjoy, ShutEye, Aspire and Huobi, and we know what it takes to move from “we got installs” to “we got users who matter.”
Some reasons teams choose us:
- We’re built for growth across borders. KPI Media works with audiences in Southeast Asia and beyond. If your business is expanding from Singapore into other countries, we can plan for that, much like we did with Enerjoy, which targets the US, New Zealand, Germany and Australia.
- We hold the right partnerships. KPI Media is a Meta Business Partner and a Google Premier Partner, credentials held by a small percentage of agencies and a sign of consistent platform performance and account health. Being a partner also means we hear about platform changes quickly, so your campaigns adapt before it hurts results.
- We see the whole picture. From creative and targeting to tracking and reporting, we connect the dots so you know what’s driving your growth. Explore more on our Tech & Mobile Apps page, or browse all our case studies.
Case Studies: Mobile App Clients
Thoughtful: When two dashboards disagreeÂ
Overview: Thoughtful is a Temasek-backed mental health company serving corporate clients across Asia and beyond. It came to us to generate more high-quality B2B leads.
Challenges: The conversions reported in HubSpot didn’t match what Google Ads reported. When two sources tell different stories, it’s hard to know which campaigns deserve more budget.
Strategy: We A/B tested landing pages (design, content and calls-to-action), compared performance across ad channels, and worked with the team to update their lead forms. That lets us align how Google Ads and HubSpot count conversions.
Result: After two years of continuous refinement, Google Ads emerged as the best channel for warm and hot leads. Landing page conversion rates improved, and the tracking discrepancy was resolved, so the team could trust its numbers.
It’s a B2B example rather than an app install story, but the lesson applies to any app: fix measurement first, then scale.
Aspire: Different markets, different playbooksÂ
Overview: Aspire is a Singapore-founded financial platform that helps entrepreneurs manage spending with corporate cards, expense management and other business finance tools.
Challenges: Its audience (founders and business owners) is niche, so finding people likely to become marketing-qualified leads took ongoing testing. Brand awareness was also stronger in Singapore than in Indonesia, so one approach wouldn’t fit both.
Strategy: We built separate funnels for each market. In Singapore we ran Google Search, Performance Max, Demand Gen and YouTube. In Indonesia we used Google Search, Performance Max and YouTube. We adapted creative style, messaging and copy to local preferences, connected the ad platforms to HubSpot to see which campaigns produced the best leads, and kept testing creatives, keywords and CTAs.
Result: Conversion rate for qualified leads rose 100% in Singapore, and click-through rate rose 200% in Indonesia.
Enerjoy, ShutEye and Me+: Search intent at scaleÂ
Overview: Enerjoy is a wellness app studio behind JustFit (home workouts), ShutEye (sleep aids and routines) and Me+ (self-care). It wanted more users from its budget, mainly in the US, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and other developed markets.
Challenges: After auditing all three ad accounts, we found the budget wasn’t working as hard as it could. Campaign structure needed a rethink.
Strategy: We focused on Search Engine Marketing across the three apps, audited each account for quick wins on cost and performance, and restructured the campaigns.
Result: Performance stabilised after the takeover in July and improved noticeably by August following the restructure, with ROAS exceeding 100% within three months.
Huobi, now HTX: Scaling installs without losing ROAS
Overview: HTX (formerly Huobi) is a global crypto exchange. The goal was more app installs across Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa without letting ROAS slip.
Challenges: Crypto advertising comes with strict platform policies, and each country has its own language and user behaviour. When we took over the account, tracking wasn’t set up properly, and ROAS was underperforming.
Strategy: We ran campaigns across Google App Campaigns, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads and YouTube, then built the strategy on three pillars: SDK tracking for accurate data by country, continuous A/B testing of formats, value propositions and local language, and audience segments organised by crypto awareness and intent.
Result: In two months, ROAS reached 130%, cost per install fell 52% and install rate rose 10%.
